About the event

Occurring as part of the Mikey Smith Raw Festival, the book launch celebrates the pilot year of the Watah Theatre and Black Theatre School in 2025. Serving as a living archive, the book captures images from all three festivals—Mikey Smith Raw Works, Audre Lorde Works-in-Process, and Word! Sound! Powah!—alongside mainstage productions from the Sankofa Trilogy: blood.claat, benu, and word! sound! powah!. It also documents the SummerWorks Festival presentation of the trilogy and the Fringe Festival production of Lulu by Sashoya Simpson, directed and dramaturged by anitafrika, as well as the culmination of the Black Theatre School pilot program.
The book features dedicated tributaries centring biomythists Kabrena Robinson, Josemar, and KayGeni, alongside costume designer Candice Dixon—artists whose practices emerged through the pilot program and exemplify its creative and pedagogical impact.
This publication is the second photo book produced by Watah Theatre in collaboration with Spolrusie Press, following the company’s inaugural season photo…
